“And what exactly is a Short Bored Surfer?”

New Years resolutions aren’t really my thing but what better way to start the New Year than with a new blog. Seeing as this is a brand spanking new blog and I’m not usually one to break with tradition I thought it would make perfect sense for the very first post to explain a few things:

  1. Who I am, what I do and where I come from
  2. Why I’ve started this blog
  3. What I’ll be blogging about
  4. How you can get involved
  5. oh and why its called the ‘Short Bored Surfer.’

So without further ado…

Who am I?

Hopefully it goes without saying that if you’re really that interested you would have already found out about me, however assumption being the mother of all muck ups I’ll tell you a little bit here too.

I was born in Weymouth (Dorset) on the Queen Mothers birthday in 1978 and shortly after named Paul Seys, although since then I have been called many other things by my friends, some unrepeatable, but most notably ‘Barney‘.

19 years later I moved to Bath to study Graphic Design, learnt some stuff, won an RSA Student Design Award and got a job at Deepend. Since heading off to London I’ve done lots of different things including starting a short lived design agency, freelancing at the British Museum and working as a college lecturer.

These days I’m Head of User Experience at Redweb, a job I truly love doing.

Why have I started this blog?

It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for years but never got round to. A big part of working in a creative industry is that ideas are always popping into your head, whether good or bad, and I seem to have my fair share of both at times! With the best intention in the World most of my ideas get forgotten about never to be seen or heard of again. Some how the idea of creating a blog has actually become a reality, whether I keep it up is another matter all together.

The main reasons for starting this blog are threefold:

  • I’m constantly seeing cool stuff that I want to share with other people. I also see lots of rubbish stuff that I like to share too!
  • It’ll hopefully help me to organise my life a bit and encourage me to write down some of my ideas that  pop into my head (most of them are rubbish but someone might like them).
  • The last reasons not really a reason but I thought it’d be nice to document all aspects of my life, not just the geeky stuff.

What will I be blogging about?

As mentioned above I’ll be aiming to write about all the different aspects of my life. The primary focus will be on my working life; user experience and usability, web design and innovation,  events and the web industry in general. Part of this, the UX bit, will hopefully involve over time. I often see websites that I wish I could improve. Sometimes its whole sites but more often than not its simply small elements of a site that add up to a bad experience and could so easily be improved. This blog will be a release for this side of me, where I can highlight the little things.

A friend of mine calls this ‘Design Vigilantism‘, although I think it originated from a blog post on Bearskinrug.

The other aspects I’ll most likely cover will be the things that keep me amused outside of work; surfing, snowboarding, travelling, running, mountain biking, films and err… stuff.

How can you get involved?

I haven’t really thought this far ahead as initially this is nothing more than a flight of fancy. However, if you like the look of things around here please subscribe to the RSS feed, leave a comment or get in touch.

Alternatively you can follow me on Twitter where I’ll be tweeting about any new posts.

Why ‘Short Bored Surfer’?

Once upon a time I stumbled across Pedro‘s blog, ‘The Longbored Surfer‘. I liked the name, asked for his permission to completely rip it off and registered shortboredsurfer.com.

Basically, I’m short, I’m a surfer and I get bored easily so have to constantly find ways to keep myself entertained. Hense the name ‘Short Bored Surfer’.

  1. Best of British luck Paul. I’ve been toying with the idea of starting up my blog again but have been procrastinating for the best part of a year.

Perhaps watching your new blog grow will be the inspiration I need.

Nice design by the way. Really fresh. Just what’s needed to blow away the cobwebs of 2008 🙂

  2. Cheers Ben,

Fingers crossed it won’t suck too much! I thought I’d struggle but each post seems to get longer and longer. I think I need to introduce some editorial control already.

Thanks for the compliments on the design. I’m trying to keep it as clean as possible, although I think the logo could do with some work still.

  3. Welcome to the (slightly overcrowded) world of blogging then mate, stumbled upon this just today! Looking forward to FWA later on this year, and catching up again soon!

the Dorset Web revolution starts here….Keep it up….

  4. This is good Barney, I like the fact you have now come to terms with being ‘Short Bored Surfer’… I will follow this blog with interest as it is something I have often pontificated about!
